Brandywine Summer Training

by Anne Pfaelzer de Ortiz on 09/08/11

Training sessions were held for Brandywine School District in July and August. In July, teachers in grades K-6 were invited to attend two-day workshops designed to introduce them to the pedagogy of Singapore Math and assist them with methods, planning, and alignment. A one-day workshop introduced teachers who wanted a more in-depth look into methods and leadership ideas to the elements of creating sprints, a more detailed look at lesson planning, and classroom management techniques. Many thanks to our wonderful presenters, Tykisha Bratcher, Bill Davidson, Janice Fan, Shirley Fletcher and Colleen Sheeron. Thanks also to Hester Sutton, Math Supervisor, and Sally Todorow, Math Coach, both of Brandywine School District. In addition to our regular supporters we would like to thank those whose in-kind support helped make this event possible: The Ramos Group, Wilmington University, Williamson Hospitality Services, the Gabriella and Paul Rosendbaum Foundation and Brandywine School District.

In August, "The Algebra-Geometry Connection" workshop was held for middle and high school math teachers. Presenter Dr. Scott Baldridge, of Louisiana State University and co-author of Elementary Math for Teachers and Elementary Geometry for Teachers, spent two intense days showing how the elementary Singapore Math curriculum leads to better student preparation for middle and high school math, demonstrating the vital links between algebra and geometry, exploring the common core standards in math for grades 7 through 12, and allowing teachers to practice methods for presenting increasingly complex algebraic and geometric ideas and constructions to their students.
